About Obong University
Obong University is the culmination of many years of planning and hard work which began prior to the
incorporation of the Proprietors, Dr. Moses Akpanudo Foundation,
in 1994 with the primary aim of promoting education at all levels and to engage in other
humanitarian endeavour that will promote the wellbeing of Nigerians.
The interest of the Proprietors in the overall educational development and general wellbeing of Nigeria found
expression in the establishment of Gene and Sue Lamb Nursery/Primary School in Obong Ntak in Etim Ekpo Local
Government Area of Akwa Ibom State to equip younger children with the tools they will need to succeed in life.
The school also donates materials and shares teaching techniques especially on developing reading skills with
other nursery schools in the area.
The idea is for as many children as possible to be prepared to become productive Nigerians
The Proprietors then established the Obong Christian High School in 1986 in the same town which turned out as
one of the first private secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. It was received rather sceptically by the public
who thought that education was the exclusive domain of government. Over the years, as the reputation of the
school grew, having created a strong culture of individual responsibility for personal success for the benefit
of the society and humanity. The school, which has various financial aid programmes for financially disadvantaged students,
lays emphasis on the sciences (to ensure that a good number of the graduates become professionals in scientific and technological fields).
Furthermore, the Proprietors, desirous of contributing to middle-level manpower development in the country, established the African College of
Management in May 1995 in the same town of Obong Ntak. The College, which offered diploma in
Management and related programmes, had matured over the years with an impressive record of performance
The Akwabia Hospital was also established in 1995 as part of preparations for the University. In the ensuing years, it had taken on a life of
its own and had to be expanded to accommodate 32 beds. It is the primary health provider for Etim Ekpo and Ika local governments.
The foregoing coupled with persistent quest for tertiary education in Akwa Ibom State as well as the favourable policy environment that encouraged private
participation in the provision of university education motivated the establishment of Obong University. Thus, the realisation of Obong University is a fulfilment
of the Proprietors ambition and desire to contribute positively to the educational development and wellbeing of the people of Nigeria and beyond by training young
men and women who will not only excel intellectually, but will be endowed with strong moral character. The dreams of the founding fathers is not only to prepare graduates
with problem solving skills in their areas of intellectual pursuit, but to equip them with
the tools to leave positive impact on the socio-economic and political development of Nigeria, Africa and Humanity.
